It’s that time of year… the sun goes down a little sooner, the night air has a chill, kids are getting ready for the first day of school, and Labor Day is just a couple weeks away. Though summer is drawing to a close, you know that fall on the Great Lakes is awesome. You might even look forward to fall for some cooler weather, brilliant colors, trick or treat, and fall sports. But no matter how fantastic fall is on the Great Lakes, there’s something special about summer...
A Gem... Bayfield, WI and Apostle Islands National Lakeshore
We love to find gems. You know… spots that you just happen upon that are super special. We were in Marquette, MI, and had a couple days left to explore before heading home. We looked at all kinds of options. We didn’t have enough time to head east and cross into Canada, we’ve been all over the “mitten” of Michigan in prior trips, and we felt like it was time to move on from Marquette.
Todd remembered a comment from Instagram… that he needs to check out the Apostle Islands National Lakeshore...
Best Beaches On The Great Lakes!
A few years ago Daniel told Todd and I that one of his travel dreams is to see all of the water in the world and how it’s different. Todd and I LOVE the water and decided make this a family travel dream! When we set out to visit Lake Erie, Lake Huron, Lake Superior, and Lake Michigan in the summer of 2016, one of the things we looked forward to most was experiencing all the beaches.
We visited over 20 beaches on the lakes and rated all of them for sand, water clarity, size, access, atmosphere, and shallow water for swimming. What follows are our top picks!...

Daniel Sees: Michigan's Upper Peninsula
I saw a waterfall and lots of cool rock formations in Pictured Rocks National Lakeshore and I saw another waterfall in Tahquamenon Falls State Park. The rock formations had lots of different colors and looked like some of the rocks had fallen off before… falling rocks are cool if you aren’t under one!
I also saw two lighthouses. One was on an island and was made out of wood… I know it seems crazy… but it actually was and it looked like an old school house. I would like to go to school there...

Michigan's Upper Peninsula... Pure Natural Beauty!
The “UP”… it’s legendary for its beauty and tranquility. It’s referred to as remote, uninhabited, and untouched. Some call it “God’s Country”. Neither Todd or I had been to the UP. Though Lake Superior wasn’t originally on our trip itinerary, we couldn’t resist the pull to experience the southern Lake Superior shore before heading to Lake Michigan.
