If you are planning a trip to the Bahamas, do yourself a favor and consider adding one short flight in order to experience some of the best beaches in the world. As i write this post i have visited 25 countries, including some of the most beautiful and iconic beaches in world (i.e. The Maldives, Bora Bora, Thailand, etc). So believe me when i say: These beaches rival some of the very best in the world. For roughly $200 (roundtrip) you can leave all of the hustle and bustle, not to mention the crowds of some of the larger islands behind. Now you might read this and think that there has to be a catch. And there is…….Are you comfortable flying in an 18 passenger prop plane for 30-45 minutes?
If the answer is yes, you’re in!! Most of these islands can be reached via several of the major airports in Florida (i.e.. Miami and Fort Lauderdale), but from my experiences one of the easiest routes is to fly through Nassau, Bahamas (NAS). For some people Nassau is paradise, with its bounty of hotel and dining options, loads of activities, etc. Not me, my beach vacations are all about well….the beach!! My personal experience is based on two specific locations each of which i have visited twice. Cape Santa Maria Beach Resort and Villas on Long Island and Kamalame Cay, a private island off the northeast coast of Andros Island. Both of these resorts are amazing, anyone that has paid them a visit would agree the accommodations, food, service, etc. are exceptional. But this post isn’t about the resorts themselves, maybe some other time, this is about the beautiful beaches. Just to give you an idea of what i am talking about click on this photo, it was taken last April at Cape Santa Maria.
Do i have your attention yet? The photo was taken late morning, and yes it really looks like this and no i didn’t need to wait for all of the people to move out of the frame. In fact, i was probably related to just about everyone on the beach at that time!! This is the type of beach that if it is mid day and you can see a handful of other people you will joke that it is crowded!!
These low key locations feature gorgeous, natural beaches with no big noisy tractors running up and down the beach every morning like some places. Yes there might be some sea weed, sea grass, drift wood on the beach……that’s what a beach is supposed to look like!! Not a uniformly groomed mass of sand, but the kind of place where you can watch crabs pop in and out of theirs holes, take long walks admiring unique shells, etc. stopping only to try and identify the passing sea life in the crystal clear waters. Now, I know these types of places aren’t for everyone. If you are looking for nightlife besides relaxing with a night cap or gazing at amazing starlit skies (free from light pollution) this isn’t for you. But if you love long stretches of beautiful untouched beaches, and activities such as sailing, fishing, beach combing, snorkeling, kayaking, etc. do yourself a favor and take the quick extra flight to one of these amazing beaches. You won’t regret it.
